Quarantine has been an interesting time, to say the least. Being left to our own devices can make or break you– in times like this with all that is going on in the world it is imperative to monitor and ensure that we are engaging in positive self-talk. Being able to step back and bring your awareness to the inner dialogue can mean the difference between mentally sinking or swimming. 

Positive self-talk tips

For many, giving time to think about that internal narrative is far from a priority, but the reality is that self-talk can influence the way we see ourselves, perceive a situation and how to perceive the world at large.  Are you realizing your inner critic could use some attention?

Here is a list of four things to do when you catch that internal narrative spiralling out of control. 

Give your inner-voice a new identity

When you catch that inner voice repeating negative thought patterns choosing to call that voice by a different name can be just the thing you need to get yourself mentally back on the right track.

According to Psychology today giving yourself psychological distance between you and your self-talk can be the hack we need to avoid spiralling down that negative path. This promotes positive self-talk.

Develop a mindfulness practice 

Developing a mindfulness practice will not only allow you to be able to create space between your thoughts it will also allow you to catch the thoughts that are not serving you. Arguably one of the more important practices when it comes to ensuring mental wellness, practising mindfulness is the difference between being in control of your thoughts or being a victim of them.

Do you know that thought? The one that makes you feel terrible, that keeps you in a slump? Do you know you don’t have to think it right? It’s so easy to forget that we can choose to stop thinking about the things that are no longer serving us.

We can decide that instead of thinking “I’m never going to get the hang of this” we can think “what an exciting challenge”. By deciding to go with a new thought that is empowering and makes us feel good we put ourselves back in the driver seat and can instantly shift our mood to positive self-talk.

Practice Self-Compassion 

Negative self-talk can make or break your ability to handle stress, your self-esteem, well-being, and symptoms of depression or anxiety. All of these things combined are arguably what makes up the quality of one’s life.

Choosing compassion or positive self-talk

in challenging and stressful moments can be one of the most crucial steps we take to ensure that no matter how tough a situation may be, we can find our way through and come out the other side better than before. 

The difference between a highly successful woman and a woman who can’t seem to achieve what she wants can often come down to the story she tells herself. So as you continue on your journey toward #bosslife remember positive self-talk can change most situations.
